Senior Mechanical Engineer Full Time

Summary:

WSP, a diverse consulting firm in Africa, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for their Cape Town office. The role involves providing consulting engineering services for HVAC system design, implementation, and closeout. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead projects, manage a team, and ensure technical and commercial success, focusing on HVAC systems with knowledge in Wet Services and Fire Engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Possess high-level technical proficiency and manage projects from inception to closeout.
  • Proficient in HVAC design, including air conditioning heat load and ventilation calculations.
  • Skilled in HVAC design software (e.g., HAP, Loadest, IES) and HVAC modeling software like AutoCAD, Revit, BIM360.
  • Knowledgeable in Wet Services/Public Health and Fire Engineering Services.
  • Understand and apply local and international standards, including SANS, British Standards, and ASHRAE.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Manage junior and senior staff on large projects.
  • Demonstrate leadership in communication, resource management, and teamwork.
  • Manage time, quality, and effort for high-quality project delivery.
  • Oversee project fees, cost control, and scope monitoring.
  • Prepare tender documentation and manage the tender process.
  • Formulate Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
  • Provide site supervision and monitor construction processes.
  • Troubleshoot issues with existing installations.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving to engineering challenges.
  • Ensure quality control and provide site supervision during construction.
  • Effectively communicate both written and orally with clients and team members.

Requirements:

  • B.Eng., B.Sc. Eng., or B.Tech. Eng. (Mechanical) Degree.
  • 7+ years of experience in the Building Services Consulting sector.
  • 2+ years of post-registration experience as a Pr. Eng. or Pr. Tech Eng.
  • Experience in HVAC mechanical design on Data Centre projects.
  • Proficient in Revit and BIM360.
  • Experience in Wet Services and Fire Engineering Services is advantageous.
  • Currently working for a consultancy as a mechanical engineer in the data centre space or at a data centre.
  • Code B driver’s licence (preferably own car).
  • Computer literacy, with programming skills being advantageous.
  • Self-motivated, team player with excellent communication and problem resolution skills.
  • Skilled in thermodynamic and pipe network design principles.
  • High level of self-sufficiency and responsibility.
  • Willing and able to travel abroad.
